Where it came from
Kochira, Koufuku Anshin Iinkai Desu. originated as a popular vocaloid song series composed by Utata-P, which explored the concept of a dystopian society obsessed with mandatory happiness. Following the song's widespread success online, the franchise was adapted into a light novel series written by Tory Hitsuji and illustrated by Wogura, which further expanded the world-building and character motivations within the titular bureau.
The manga adaptation, also penned by Tory Hitsuji, retains the series' hallmark aesthetic—a jarring, pastel-colored vision of psychological control. The design choices, led by Wogura’s distinct, doll-like character art, serve to mask the unsettling nature of the narrative, creating a deliberate juxtaposition between the superficial cheer of the 'Happiness Committee' and the dark, authoritarian reality faced by the citizens. Upon release, the series was received as a notable example of the trend of vocaloid-inspired multimedia storytelling.
