Where it came from
Koukou Jihen, written by Keisuke Matsuoka, originated as a popular light novel series before being adapted into manga format. Matsuoka, widely recognized for his research-heavy approach to thriller and mystery fiction, designed the narrative to explore intense survival scenarios within the Japanese high school education system, grounding the high-stakes plot in a critique of contemporary social structures.
The visual adaptation was crafted to capture the taut, cinematic atmosphere of Matsuoka’s prose. The illustration style emphasizes sharp character designs and dynamic framing, which were received well by readers for balancing the aesthetic sensibilities of shonen manga with the darker, psychological tension inherent in the author’s original storytelling style.
