Koutetsujou no Kabaneri

Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, or Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, originated as an original anime television series produced by Wit Studio and directed by Tetsurou Araki in 2016. Developed as an original work rather than an adaptation, the project reunited key creative staff from the studio's successful production of Attack on Titan, aiming to replicate a high-octane, steampunk-infused survival narrative. The series was designed with a focus on detailed mechanical aesthetics and a distinct visual style characterized by complex character designs created by Haruhiko Mikimoto.

The series received significant attention for its high-quality animation and aggressive action sequences, set against a backdrop of post-apocalyptic Japan plagued by parasitic monsters known as Kabane. While the narrative drew comparisons to other survival-horror works of the era, the series established its own identity through its fusion of Edo-period aesthetics and industrial steam-powered technology. Its success led to the production of compilation films and a sequel theatrical release, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato, cementing its place as a notable entry in the studio's mid-2010s output.
