Kurenaizoushi - Bakumatsu Kyouto Ibun

Kurenaizoushi - Bakumatsu Kyouto Ibun is a historical manga series written and illustrated by Kaori Touma. Set during the volatile Bakumatsu period in Kyoto, the work centers on the political unrest and social upheaval of the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate. Touma developed the series to blend authentic period details with a character-driven narrative, focusing on the shifting loyalties and personal dilemmas faced by those living in the shadow of the Meiji Restoration.

The aesthetic of the series is defined by its clean, classic shoujo-influenced art style, which Touma utilized to capture the tension of the era while maintaining a focus on emotional interpersonal dynamics. The work was released as part of the broader wave of historical fiction in Japanese manga, serving as a modest entry in the subgenre that explores the twilight of the samurai class. It was received by readers as a thoughtful contribution to historical period pieces, noted primarily for its attention to the atmospheric detail of late 19th-century Kyoto.
