Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, known in English as The Apothecary Diaries, originated as a web novel series written by Hyuuga Natsu on the user-generated content site Shousetsuka ni Narou in 2011. The narrative follows Maomao, an unconventional young woman kidnapped and sold into service at the imperial court, where she utilizes her extensive knowledge of poisons and medicine to solve mysterious ailments and political intrigues. The story gained significant traction for its blend of historical mystery and grounded character work, leading to a light novel adaptation featuring illustrations by Touko Shino.

The transition to print and subsequent manga adaptations—one serialized in Monthly Big Gangan and another in Monthly Sunday Gene-X—solidified the series as a major success in the mystery genre.
