Labyrinth of Fairytales

The Labyrinth of Fairytales series showcases the literary legacy of Ogawa Mimei, widely regarded as the father of modern Japanese children's literature. Writing during the early 20th century, Mimei sought to move away from traditional didactic moralizing in favor of poetic, often melancholic stories that spoke directly to the emotional complexities of childhood. His work emerged from a broader Taisho-era movement that prioritized artistic expression and humanistic sensitivity, positioning the fairytale as a serious medium for exploring existential wonder and social consciousness.

The design and presentation of these volumes generally reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of Japanese publishing during the transition toward modernism. By synthesizing folk-inspired motifs with the introspective themes characteristic of Mimei's writing, the collections were crafted to bridge the gap between classic oral storytelling and contemporary literature. These volumes are noted for their enduring cultural impact, having played a fundamental role in shaping the literary upbringing of generations and establishing a standard for the Japanese short story format.
