Lacerda's Journey to Cazembe in 1798 Translated and Annotated by R. F. Burton

Originally written in Portuguese as the diary of Francisco de Lacerda's 1798 expedition, the text documents an ambitious and ultimately tragic attempt by the Portuguese crown to establish a land route between their colonies in Angola and Mozambique. Lacerda, an astronomer and explorer, died of fever during the journey, and his manuscript remained a significant, if obscure, primary source for African interior exploration until it was brought to the attention of the Royal Geographical Society.

The English translation was prepared by Sir Richard Francis Burton, the famed Victorian explorer and orientalist, and published in 1873. Burton was drawn to Lacerda’s detailed astronomical and anthropological observations, utilizing the text to contextualize his own interests in African geography and colonial expansion. The translation was praised for its meticulous annotation, reflecting Burton's characteristic scholarly rigor and his lifelong preoccupation with the mapping of the African continent.
