Lady Inger of Östrât. Tr. by Charles Archer. The vikings at Helgeland. Tr. by William Archer. The pretenders. Tr. by William Archer

This volume comprises three of Henrik Ibsen’s early historical plays, translated by brothers William and Charles Archer. Published as part of the Collected Works of Henrik Ibsen during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these translations were instrumental in introducing Ibsen’s complex dramatic vision to the English-speaking world. William Archer, a dedicated critic and translator, was central to the Ibsen movement in Britain, working tirelessly to strip away the stiff, moralizing interpretations that had previously stifled the playwright's reputation abroad.

The plays themselves represent Ibsen’s formative period, moving from romantic national sagas like 'The Vikings at Helgeland' toward the psychological and political depth found in 'The Pretenders' and 'Lady Inger of Östrât.' The design of this edition reflects the era's standard for scholarly collections, focusing on readability and accessible literary criticism. The Archers' translations are noted for their fidelity to Ibsen's intent and their significant impact on the development of modern realism in the theater, marking a transition point where Ibsen moved from a local Scandinavian interest to a global dramatic icon.
