Larousse Mensuel-Illustré, Revue Encyclopádique Universelle

The Larousse Mensuel-Illustré was launched in 1907 by the Librairie Larousse as a monthly supplement to the renowned Grand Dictionnaire Universel. Designed to bridge the gap between static reference works and the rapid pace of early 20th-century events, it provided readers with timely updates on politics, science, and the arts. Its publication was a strategic effort by the house of Larousse to maintain the relevance of its encyclopedic empire by chronicling the modern world in real-time.

The publication was notable for its distinct editorial style, which favored a high density of information accompanied by technical illustrations, photographs, and maps that reflected the aesthetic sensibilities of the Belle Époque and the subsequent interwar period. By integrating contemporary reportage with rigorous lexicographical standards, the editors aimed to provide a comprehensive record of global progress. It remained a staple of French intellectual life until the mid-20th century, serving as a primary visual and textual archive for its subscribers.
