Where it came from
L'attente, originally published in Korean as Jeon-jaeng-eul i-gyeon-dyeo-naen sa-ram-deul, was crafted by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim to document the harrowing experiences of families torn apart by the Korean War. Through extensive interviews, the author chronicles the life of an elderly woman searching for her son, whom she lost during the chaos of the partition. Gendry-Kim employs a striking, raw black-and-white ink brush style that mirrors the emotional intensity and historical weight of her subject matter.
The work is situated within Gendry-Kim’s broader body of graphic literature, which frequently explores themes of displacement, historical trauma, and human resilience. Upon its release in the international market, the book received significant critical acclaim for its empathetic storytelling and its ability to render complex geopolitical issues into an intimate, accessible narrative. It is widely regarded as a profound contribution to the genre of historical graphic novels, offering a poignant look at the personal scars left by the division of the Korean Peninsula.
