Where it came from
Life of Death was authored by the independent artist Dredious, emerging from the digital and self-published manga scene. The series was conceived as a philosophical exploration of mortality, moving away from traditional shonen tropes to focus on atmospheric storytelling and existential themes. It reflects a shift in independent manga production, where creators leverage online platforms to reach niche audiences interested in somber, character-driven narratives.
The design and artistic approach of the volume are characterized by high-contrast ink work and a minimalist aesthetic. Dredious opted for heavy shadows and sparse dialogue, aiming to evoke a sense of isolation and quiet contemplation in the reader. Upon its release, the work gained recognition within independent graphic novel circles for its cohesive visual identity and its willingness to tackle abstract concepts through a stark, monochromatic lens.
