Lim Kkeok-jeong - The Generous Bandit

Lim Kkeok-jeong, adapted into manhwa form by the celebrated artist Lee Doo-ho, draws from the historical figure of a 16th-century Joseon Dynasty outlaw who led a peasant uprising against corrupt officials. Lee Doo-ho, a master of the traditional brush-and-ink style, sought to capture the grit of the period by utilizing a distinctive, expressive artistic vernacular that moved away from Westernized comics to emphasize Korean cultural identity.

First serialized in the late 1980s, the work was received as a landmark of historical manhwa, praised for its cinematic pacing and the deep empathy with which Lee depicted the suffering and resilience of the common people. It stands as a definitive graphic interpretation of the Lim Kkeok-jeong legend, blending meticulous research into historical costumes and settings with a stylized, dynamic visual storytelling that remains a hallmark of Lee's contribution to the medium.
