Literarischer Grundriß zur Geschichte der Deutschen Poesie von der ältesten Zeit bis in das sechzehnte Jahrhundert

Published in 1812 in Leipzig, this volume represents a pivotal moment in the development of German philology and the systematic study of medieval vernacular literature. Johann Gustav Gottlieb Büsching, a noted librarian and historian, curated this work during a period of rising interest in German national identity and the preservation of early poetic traditions. By organizing the literary output from the earliest documented eras through the sixteenth century, the volume served as a foundational bibliographic guide for scholars attempting to codify a fragmented literary history.

Büsching’s approach was rooted in the rigorous archival methods of the early nineteenth-century German school, aiming to move beyond subjective literary appreciation toward a structural, chronological cataloging of sources. His design focused on accessibility and academic utility, providing a comprehensive index that reflected the scholarly rigor of his time. The work was received as an essential reference tool for contemporary researchers and remains a significant artifact for historians interested in the evolution of German literary canonization during the Romantic era.
