Lupin III

Lupin III first appeared in 1967 within the pages of Weekly Manga Action, created by the artist Kazuhiko Kato under the pen name Monkey Punch. Inspired by Maurice Leblanc’s gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, the series introduced Arsène Lupin III as the grandson of the original literary character. Monkey Punch intended to create a fast-paced, irreverent caper series that blended hard-boiled aesthetics with slapstick comedy, heavily influenced by the dynamic layouts and cinematic framing of mid-century American comic books.

The series became a cultural touchstone in Japan, particularly after its successful transition to animation in the early 1970s. Its design language is defined by the sharp, angular character archetypes of the rogue, the femme fatale, and the relentless inspector, which became iconic tropes in manga. While initially received as a niche seinen title, the franchise’s longevity is attributed to its adaptability, allowing various directors and writers to iterate on the characters while maintaining the core appeal of the high-stakes heist genre.
