Where it came from
The Macross manga adaptation by Sakaoka Noboru was produced in the early 1980s, shortly after the debut of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross anime series. As was common practice during the era of the Japanese robot anime boom, manga adaptations were commissioned to capitalize on the popularity of the television broadcast, offering fans a condensed or alternative interpretation of the show's complex narrative involving interstellar war and idol culture.
Sakaoka Noboru’s artistic approach prioritized the kinetic energy of the series' transformable mecha, the Valkyries, while attempting to distill the sprawling epic into a portable print format. His character designs remained faithful to the animation models established by Haruhiko Mikimoto, though the adaptation is recognized for its unique panel pacing that reflects the specific graphic style favored by shonen magazines of the period.
