Where it came from
MAD PAPA is a dark comedy manga series written and illustrated by Seki Yoshimi, serialized in the mid-1990s. The story centers on a young girl and her eccentric father, who functions as a hitman, blending elements of high-stakes criminal life with the mundane tropes of domestic sitcoms. It emerged during a period of experimentation in the manga industry where creators often tested the boundaries of genre by juxtaposing violent or antisocial behavior with slapstick humor and heartfelt family dynamics.
The character design and artistic style reflect the aesthetic preferences of the era’s seinen manga magazines. Yoshimi emphasized clean lines and expressive, somewhat exaggerated character reactions to highlight the absurdity of the central premise. While the series maintains a niche following, it is frequently cited by collectors for its distinctive tone and for representing a specific subgenre of 1990s Japanese comics that favored unconventional protagonists and cynical, yet comedic, storytelling.
