Where it came from
Published in Japan in the late 1990s, this manga volume emerged during the height of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game's international expansion. It was created to provide a narrative framework for the 'Urza's Saga' block of cards, which introduced the central conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra. The project sought to translate the high-fantasy lore of the game into a format accessible to the Japanese manga market, leveraging the popularity of the game among hobbyists during that period.
The volume was illustrated by Ono Toshihiro, a prolific artist known for his work on various game-based adaptations. His design approach emphasized the epic, conflict-heavy nature of the Magic multiverse, focusing on the mechanical and magical rivalry that defined the brothers' struggle. While it was received primarily as a niche tie-in for established players, it remains a notable example of how the game's expansive lore was interpreted through the lens of late 20th-century manga aesthetics.
