Where it came from
The Mai-Hime FIRST ATTACK! Comic Anthology was published in 2005 by Kadokawa Shoten as part of the promotional expansion for the Mai-Hime anime series. Following the success of the original television broadcast, anthologies like this were commissioned to offer fans additional perspectives on the characters, featuring a variety of short-form comedic and slice-of-life narratives that deviated from the heavier plot threads of the main series.
The volume features illustrations and contributions from various manga artists, with Ueda Rieko credited as a primary contributor to the collection. The design and stylistic direction aimed to capture the lighter, high-school-centric atmosphere of the show, focusing on character-driven gags and fan-service elements. It was received as a standard tie-in publication, typical of the mid-2000s anime merchandising boom, providing a supplementary experience for dedicated viewers of the franchise.
