Where it came from
The Mandarin Orange Picture Diary, known in Japan as Mikan Enikki, was created by mangaka Miwa Abiko and serialized in the manga magazine LaLa starting in the late 1980s. The series centers on a young boy who adopts a talking orange-furred cat named Mikan, blending domestic humor with supernatural elements as the cat explores the human world and reflects on its past life. It became a significant title of its era, eventually inspiring an anime adaptation that aired in the early 1990s.
Abiko’s artistic style in this collection is celebrated for its soft, expressive character designs and its gentle, episodic approach to storytelling. By focusing on the emotional bond between a child and an unconventional pet, the series carved out a distinct niche within the shojo demographic, prioritizing warmth and light-hearted comedy over more intense melodrama. It remains fondly remembered by collectors for its heartwarming aesthetic and the whimsical personality of its titular feline protagonist.
