Maruja: Roman von Francis Bret Harte. Autoris. Übers. aus dem Engl. von Auguste Scheibe

Maruja was originally published in 1885 as a serial and later a novel by the American author Francis Bret Harte, a writer celebrated for his tales of the California Gold Rush. This specific edition represents the German-language reception of Harte's work during a period when his frontier-themed narratives enjoyed significant popularity across Europe. The translation was managed by Auguste Scheibe, a translator who facilitated the introduction of contemporary American literature to German-speaking readers during the late nineteenth century.

The publication follows the stylistic conventions of the era's authorized translations, aiming to preserve the adventurous spirit and local color that characterized Harte’s prose. By providing an 'Autorisierte Übersetzung,' or authorized translation, the publisher ensured the text aligned with the author's intent while adapting the narrative flow for the European market. It reflects the broader trend of international literary exchange, where regional American realism was repurposed to satisfy the curiosity of an overseas audience captivated by the romance and harsh realities of the American West.
