Mashiba Kyoudai wa Kao ga Katai

Mashiba Kyoudai wa Kao ga Katai, or The Mashiba Siblings Have Stiff Faces, is a manga series created by Mariko Kikuchi, who is perhaps best known for her poignant and emotionally resonant work in exploring complex personal struggles. This series fits into a broader body of work that focuses on the nuances of familial relationships and the peculiar ways individuals cope with their environments, utilizing a distinctively deadpan, minimalist aesthetic to emphasize the emotional distance and stoicism inherent in the titular characters.

The series was developed within the context of contemporary seinen manga, which frequently explores unconventional character dynamics and slice-of-life narratives that avoid traditional tropes. Kikuchi’s approach to the design and illustration is defined by her signature stripped-back style, where subtle shifts in facial expressions and body language serve as the primary drivers of the narrative. Upon its release, it was noted for its understated humor and its ability to find profound resonance in the routine interactions of its characters, earning a reputation among readers for being both charmingly odd and unexpectedly moving.
