Master Keaton

Master Keaton was created by writer Katsushika Hokusei and illustrator Naoki Urasawa, serialized in Big Comic Original between 1988 and 1994. The series follows Taichi Hiraga-Keaton, a half-Japanese, half-English insurance investigator and former SAS survival instructor, whose academic background in archaeology often informs his problem-solving approach. The work emerged as a cerebral alternative to the action-heavy adventure manga of the late eighties, blending episodic procedural mystery with historical and anthropological detail.

Naoki Urasawa’s illustrative style, marked by a grounded, cinematic approach, was instrumental in bringing a sense of realism to the character’s global travels. The series was met with significant critical acclaim for its intellectual depth and character-driven narratives, eventually winning the Shogakukan Manga Award. It remains a hallmark of Urasawa’s early career, showcasing the technical precision and narrative complexity that would later define his more internationally recognized works.
