Mathfile user's guide: mathematical reviews online. Index of subject classification words. Chap. 5

The Mathfile user's guide was produced by the American Mathematical Society during the early era of digital bibliographic databases. It served as a critical technical manual for researchers and librarians navigating Mathfile, the online precursor to the modern MathSciNet platform. The publication was designed to help users decode and leverage the Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) system, which organized vast quantities of mathematical literature into a searchable, hierarchical index.

The documentation reflects a period of transition in academic research, moving from traditional printed indexes to computer-assisted information retrieval. The American Mathematical Society authored the guide to standardize how scholars queried the system using specific keywords and numerical classifications. As a specialized instructional text, its design prioritized functional clarity and utility, ensuring that the increasingly complex landscape of mathematical research remained accessible to its target audience of professionals and institutional subscribers.
