Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin

Mayonaka no Occult Koumuin, written and illustrated by Tamotsu Youko, debuted in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Asuka magazine in 2015. The series emerged from a fascination with modern urban fantasy, centering on the night-shift division of a Tokyo ward office tasked with managing supernatural occurrences. Youko designed the narrative to balance contemporary bureaucratic drudgery with the ethereal mythology of Japanese folklore, creating a grounded setting for otherworldly encounters.

The artwork is noted for its intricate character designs and atmospheric depictions of Tokyo at night, which help establish the series' signature melancholic yet investigative tone. Upon its serialization and subsequent collection into tankobon volumes, the manga was well-received by readers for its focus on the procedural aspects of the supernatural. This popularity eventually led to an anime adaptation in 2019, further cementing its status within the shojo and fantasy genres.
