Medarot 2

Medarot 2, published in the late 1990s, serves as a cornerstone of the Medarot (Medabots) franchise, which centers on a world where children battle with customizable, autonomous robots. The manga series, written and illustrated by Horuma Rin, was serialized in Comic BomBom to capitalize on the success of the original Game Boy titles. It is deeply rooted in the era's fascination with creature-collection mechanics, blending traditional shonen action with a unique aesthetic that distinguishes between the mechanical, modular designs of the robots and the human protagonists who command them.

Horuma Rin’s artistic approach prioritized the distinct silhouettes and mechanical parts of the Medarots, a design choice intended to mirror the collectible nature of the game’s plastic model kits. While the manga shares the same narrative world as the video games, it is noted for its sharper tone and its specific focus on the emotional bond between the protagonist, Ikki Tenryou, and his partner robot, Metabee. The series was well-received by its target demographic, helping solidify the franchise's identity as both a compelling narrative experience and a successful merchandise-driven brand.
