Where it came from
Mekakushi no Kuni, or Land of the Blindfolded, was serialized in the manga magazine LaLa from 2000 to 2005. Written and illustrated by Sakura Tsukuba, the series emerged during a period when the shojo genre was exploring more supernatural and psychological themes alongside traditional romance. It follows the life of a girl named Kurumi who possesses the ability to see the 'inner hearts' of others, a power that complicates her social interactions and personal development throughout her school years.
Sakura Tsukuba crafted this series with a focus on introspective character growth, utilizing the supernatural element as a metaphor for the difficulties of teenage empathy and understanding. The manga was well-regarded for its gentle tone and artistic style, which favored soft lines and emotional resonance over high-octane action. Upon its completion, the series gained a dedicated following among readers who appreciated its grounded approach to fantasy-tinged everyday life.
