Melty Blood

Melty Blood originated as a collaborative project between the visual novel studio Type-Moon and the developer French-Bread. Initially released as a 2D fighting game in 2002 for the Windows platform, it served as a spin-off to the renowned visual novel Tsukihime. The project was conceived to translate the intense, character-driven narratives of the Tsukihime universe into a fast-paced, mechanically deep fighting game format, blending traditional sprite-based animation with unique systems like the 'shielding' mechanic that rewarded precise defensive play.

The character designs and core aesthetics were developed by Takashi Takeuchi, the co-founder of Type-Moon, whose signature style defined the look of the franchise. Upon its release, the game was received with significant enthusiasm within the fighting game community, particularly in Japan, where it cultivated a dedicated competitive scene. Over the subsequent two decades, the title evolved through numerous iterations, expansions, and ports, eventually gaining a cult international following that appreciated its blend of intricate lore and highly technical combat.
