Where it came from
Meng Wu and Chu Zi, often associated with the overarching narrative of the Kingdom series, originates from the acclaimed seinen manga Kingdom written and illustrated by Hara Yasuhisa. First serialized in Weekly Young Jump in 2006, the series is a fictionalized account of the Warring States period in China. These specific figures are central to the manga's depiction of the Qin state's military hierarchy, embodying the historical weight and tactical complexity that Yasuhisa meticulously researched to bring ancient history to contemporary readers.
Hara Yasuhisa designed these characters to represent the shifting power dynamics and personal ideologies prevalent during the era of the Seven Warring States. His artistic approach emphasizes dynamic action sequences and detailed character expressions, aiming to humanize historical figures while adhering to a grand, cinematic scope. The work has been widely received as a seminal piece of modern historical fiction, praised for its depth, character development, and Yasuhisa’s signature bold, energetic linework.
