Merchant of Venice, The: Side By Side

The Side By Side series, published by Prestwick House, was designed to bridge the gap between Elizabethan English and modern readability for students and enthusiasts alike. This volume presents the original Shakespearean text of The Merchant of Venice on the left-hand page, while a contemporary translation appears on the facing right-hand page. This format emerged from a pedagogical need to support readers through the complexities of Shakespeare’s syntax and archaic vocabulary without sacrificing the integrity of the primary source material.

The editorial philosophy behind this series emphasizes accessibility and comprehensive literary engagement. By pairing the Bard’s original verse with a modern prose equivalent, the publishers intended to demystify one of Shakespeare’s most complex and controversial comedies. While traditional scholars have long debated the merits of modernizing such texts, this series has been widely received in educational settings as a functional tool for classrooms and those approaching the play for the first time, ensuring the nuanced themes of justice and mercy remain approachable.
