Where it came from
Mia Myhr and the Children That Disappeared is a Norwegian graphic novel written and illustrated by Sara Hjadar, marking the beginning of an atmospheric horror series for younger readers. The work emerged from a growing trend in Scandinavian comics, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional children's literature and the dark, evocative style of modern dark fantasy graphic novels. It was crafted to deliver a sense of unease and mystery, grounded in the cultural landscape of the North.
Hjadar designed the aesthetic of the series to balance eerie, supernatural tension with a relatable protagonist. Through her distinctive illustrative style, she creates a visual narrative that emphasizes shadows and forest motifs, effectively setting a tone of encroaching danger. Upon its release, the volume was noted for its ability to tackle heavier themes within the graphic novel format, receiving praise for its artistic direction and its contribution to the expanding field of Nordic comics for adolescents.
