Mikakunin de Shinkoukei

Mikakunin de Shinkoukei, known in English as Engaged to the Unidentified, began serialization in the Japanese seinen manga magazine Manga 4-koma Palette in 2009. Created by the manga artist Cherry Arai, the series fits within the four-panel comic strip tradition, utilizing a lighthearted, gag-oriented structure to explore the domestic complications of a young girl whose life is upended by an arranged marriage to a boy with supernatural origins. The work serves as a prime example of the 'slice-of-life' comedy genre that gained significant traction in the late 2000s.

Arai’s design approach prioritizes soft, character-driven aesthetics that emphasize the whimsical nature of the protagonist’s sudden, otherworldly engagement. By blending supernatural elements with mundane school life, the series aims for a balance between warmth and comedic absurdity. Upon its publication and subsequent 2014 anime adaptation, the series received a positive reception from fans of the genre, who appreciated the gentle interplay between the characters and the consistent, recognizable artistic style Arai maintained throughout the volumes.
