The series centers on O-chika, a young woman who works at the Mishima-ya merchant house in Edo-period Japan. She serves as a listener for visitors who come to share their unsettling or supernatural experiences, a framing device that echoes the traditional 'hyakumonogatari kaidankai,' or hundred-story gathering, in which participants would tell ghost stories to summon spirits.
