Mister Ajikko

Mister Ajikko was created by mangaka Daisuke Terasawa and originally serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine from 1986 to 1989. As one of the earliest and most influential culinary-themed manga series, it follows the story of Youichi Ajiyoshi, a young prodigy who manages his late father's restaurant while competing in high-stakes cooking battles. The narrative established many of the tropes now common in the genre, such as over-the-top reactions to delicious food and the introduction of avant-garde culinary techniques to resolve competitive challenges.

The series achieved significant cultural status in Japan, leading to a long-running anime adaptation produced by Sunrise that aired between 1987 and 1989. Terasawa’s art style focused heavily on expressive character designs and detailed depictions of food preparation, which helped transition the concept of the cooking competition into a mainstream shonen staple.
