Where it came from
Mobile Suit Gundam Gaiden: DEAD ZONE was serialized in the late 1990s as part of the broader expansion of the Gundam franchise into side-story manga narratives. Conceived during a period when Bandai sought to diversify the Universal Century timeline beyond the animated series, this work serves as an experimental entry that explores the psychological and tactical intensity of smaller-scale mobile suit skirmishes.
The manga was illustrated by Baba Yasushi, whose gritty, kinetic aesthetic helped define the look of this specific Gaiden sub-series. Yasushi opted for a stark, heavy-ink style that emphasized the claustrophobic and often desperate nature of the conflicts portrayed in the story, marking a departure from the cleaner, more heroic depictions found in contemporary mainstream Gundam media of that era.
