Where it came from
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED ECLIPSE debuted in 2021 as a manga series serialized in Gundam Ace, acting as a side story set within the popular Cosmic Era timeline. Written by SOW with character designs by Soga Atsushi and mechanical designs by Junichi Akutsu, the narrative is positioned in the interwar period between the events of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. The project was conceived to flesh out the C.E. 72 timeframe, focusing on the specialized unit ODR and their efforts during a time of fragile geopolitical stability.
The creative direction prioritizes a grittier tone compared to the mainline television series, emphasizing the clandestine operations of the protagonists. The mechanical design of the titular Eclipse Gundam, which features a unique transformation gimmick, reflects the series' intent to showcase experimental prototype technology. It has been received by the fanbase as a deliberate expansion of the SEED lore, intended to cater to long-term enthusiasts of the franchise's technical specifications and extended universe.
