Where it came from
MoMo: The Blood Taker, created by mangaka Sugito Akira, first appeared in the pages of Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump in 2019. The series emerged within the seinen manga landscape, blending noir aesthetics with supernatural horror elements. Akira designed the narrative to center on a detective investigating a series of gruesome murders, only to become entangled with a vampire protagonist, drawing inspiration from classic crime thrillers while subverting traditional creature-feature tropes.
The visual direction of the series is characterized by high-contrast ink work and a gritty atmosphere that emphasizes the tension between the human detective and the undead entity. Upon its release, the manga was noted by readers for its mature themes and Akira's distinct character designs, which moved away from stereotypical depictions of vampires to offer a more grounded, yet darkly stylized, perspective on the genre.
