Monatshefte für Musikgeschichte

The Monatshefte für Musikgeschichte was established in 1869 as the official journal of the Gesellschaft für Musikforschung in Berlin. It emerged during a pivotal era for historical musicology, intended to serve as a rigorous repository for source materials, transcriptions of rare scores, and critical reports on music history. The publication sought to formalize the study of music as a scientific discipline, bridging the gap between archival discovery and scholarly discourse within the German-speaking academic community.

The journal’s editorial direction was heavily influenced by Robert Eitner, a foundational figure in bibliographical musicology whose systematic approach defined the publication's content for decades. Under Eitner's stewardship, the Monatshefte became a primary vehicle for the dissemination of thematic catalogs and early music research. While the journal was often dense and highly specialized, it was widely received by nineteenth-century scholars as an essential, authoritative index for documenting European musical heritage and the reconstruction of lost or forgotten works.
