Monster Child

Monster Child, written and illustrated by Lee Sang Yun, emerged as part of a wave of South Korean manhwa that explored psychological themes through the lens of horror and the supernatural. Created to bridge the gap between traditional storytelling and darker, character-driven visual narratives, the work reflects the artist's focus on the uncanny experiences of youth. It is deeply rooted in a minimalist aesthetic that prioritizes atmospheric tension over elaborate action sequences, allowing the internal state of the characters to dictate the pacing of the narrative.

The design of the volume emphasizes a stark, monochromatic visual language intended to evoke a sense of unease and isolation. Lee Sang Yun utilized clean lines and high-contrast shading to highlight the protagonist's struggle against both physical monsters and metaphorical demons. Upon its release, the series was noted by readers and critics for its unconventional approach to the horror genre, moving away from typical genre tropes to provide a more introspective look at trauma and growing up, ultimately securing a dedicated, if niche, following among fans of psychological manhwa.
