Where it came from
Moon Child was serialized in LaLa magazine between 1989 and 1992, emerging during a period when Reiko Shimizu was establishing herself as a preeminent voice in shōjo science fiction. The series is centered on the biological and emotional evolution of a genderless creature discovered in the ocean, a narrative choice that allowed Shimizu to explore complex themes of identity, humanity, and the transience of life through a lens of speculative tragedy.
Shimizu is widely recognized for her meticulous, ethereal art style, characterized by delicate linework and an atmospheric, often melancholy, aesthetic. Moon Child is frequently cited as one of her most poignant works, praised for its philosophical depth and its ability to weave mythological symbolism with futuristic settings. It remains a foundational text in the artist's bibliography, reflecting her signature commitment to challenging the emotional boundaries of the manga medium.
