Where it came from
Mudmen is a seminal work by the Japanese manga artist Morohoshi Daijirou, first serialized in the late 1970s. The series draws heavily from the folklore and cultural anthropology of Papua New Guinea, specifically reimagining the enigmatic Asaro mudmen through a lens of supernatural mystery and folk horror. Morohoshi, known for his deep interest in mythology and the occult, crafted these stories to explore the intersection of modern human experience and ancient, untamed belief systems.
The design and artistic direction of the series are noted for Morohoshi’s distinct, surrealist aesthetic, which prioritizes atmospheric tension over traditional action-oriented storytelling. His approach to character design emphasizes the uncanny, using sparse dialogue and unsettling imagery to evoke a sense of dread. Upon its release, the work was received as a sophisticated departure from mainstream manga, earning a dedicated following among readers of esoteric and psychological fiction who appreciated its intellectual rigor and departure from standard genre tropes.
