Where it came from
Murderhouse OCT: Finnegan's Wake is a niche, artist-driven original character tournament (OCT) volume created by the artist known as Luny. Emerging from the vibrant subculture of online community art challenges, these volumes were conceived as a collaborative storytelling platform where participants submitted original characters to compete in narrative-driven artistic duels. The project draws thematic inspiration from Joyce’s complex literary work, reinterpreting it through the lens of early-2000s webcomic aesthetics and dark, surrealist character design.
Luny designed the series to emphasize visual fluidity and high-contrast ink work, characteristic of the era's digital art trends on platforms like DeviantArt and specialized forum communities. The design aesthetic prioritizes atmospheric gloom and experimental page layouts, reflecting the chaotic and non-linear nature of the source material. While the work remains a deep-cut reference within specific online art circles, it is regarded by enthusiasts of the medium as a significant example of the fan-led tournament scene's creative output during its peak years.
