Mutsu Enmei Ryuu Gaiden - Shura no Toki

Mutsu Enmei Ryuu Gaiden: Shura no Toki is a historical martial arts manga series written and illustrated by Masatoshi Kawahara, first serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Magazine in 1989. The narrative functions as a spin-off and prequel to the author's primary work, Mutsu Enmei Ryu Gaiden, focusing on the lineage of the fictional, invincible Mutsu Enmei Ryu martial arts style across different eras of Japanese history. By centering each arc on a different protagonist spanning from the Heian period to the Bakumatsu, Kawahara explores the intersection of legendary combat prowess and significant historical transitions.

The series is noted for its meticulous approach to historical research and its portrayal of famous figures such as Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Sakamoto Ryoma. Kawahara’s artistic style emphasizes the stark, kinetic nature of his protagonist's unarmed combat against armed opponents, which became a hallmark of his technical approach. The manga was well-received for its somber tone and structural ambition, eventually leading to a 26-episode anime adaptation in 2004 that introduced the series to a wider international audience interested in seinen and chanbara-style storytelling.
