My Androgynous Boyfriend

My Androgynous Boyfriend, originally serialized in the Japanese magazine Feel Young starting in 2018, was created by the mangaka Tamekou. The series explores the life of Wako, an office worker, and her partner Meguru, a gender-nonconforming model who embraces a delicate, feminine aesthetic. The narrative emerged within a growing cultural space in contemporary manga that prioritizes gentle, slice-of-life explorations of modern relationships and the deconstruction of traditional gender roles in Japan.

Tamekou’s design for the series emphasizes soft line work and a deliberate focus on the mundane, tender interactions between the leads, moving away from high-conflict tropes common in romance manga. The work received critical recognition for its empathetic portrayal of non-binary expression and domestic partnership, resonating with readers who value authentic character studies. Its success prompted an international release, introducing Tamekou’s specific visual style to a broader audience interested in progressive character-driven storytelling.
