Where it came from
My Boy, or Watashi no Shonen, was serialized in Kodansha's Monthly Young Magazine starting in 2016. Created by Hitomi Takano, the series explores the complex and delicate psychological connection between Satoko, a thirty-year-old office worker, and Mashu, a twelve-year-old boy she encounters in a park. The narrative was conceived to examine the nuances of human relationships that exist outside traditional categories, focusing on loneliness, emotional support, and the blurred lines of companionship.
Takano’s design and artistic style are characterized by a restrained, atmospheric aesthetic that emphasizes quiet moments and internal reflection. The manga was received as a contemplative work of Seinen fiction, noted for its sensitive handling of themes that often spark debate regarding boundaries and maturity. It gained critical attention for its atmospheric paneling and the stark emotional growth of its protagonists, positioning it as a distinct entry in the genre of character-driven drama.
