Where it came from
My Broken Mariko was created by Waka Hirako and originally serialized in the Japanese digital magazine Comic BRIDGE online in 2019. The story serves as a raw, emotionally charged exploration of grief, friendship, and the complexities of trauma, focusing on a woman who embarks on a journey to scatter the ashes of her late best friend. It was subsequently collected into a single volume by Kadokawa, quickly gaining critical acclaim for its poignant narrative and distinct, expressive art style.
The design of the work reflects Hirako’s intent to portray the volatility and intensity of mourning. Hirako utilized sharp, dynamic lines and a visceral visual approach to contrast the quiet landscapes of the protagonist's journey with the inner turbulence of her memories. Upon its international release, the volume was widely recognized for its masterful handling of difficult subject matter, eventually earning prestigious industry honors, including the New Faces Award at the 24th Japan Media Arts Festival.
