Where it came from
My Engagement Was Called off Under False Accusations, but Who Ever Said My Face Was Ugly Beneath the Mask? originated as a light novel series before being adapted into a manga, written by En Nekokawa. The story is a staple of the 'rejection' subgenre within Japanese web fiction, where a protagonist is publicly humiliated and cast out of their social standing due to false pretenses, only to find personal liberation and reveal their true, often hidden, value.
The narrative focus centers on the reclamation of agency and the subversion of societal expectations regarding beauty and honor. By incorporating themes of disfigurement and masking, the series plays on classic fairy tale archetypes, updated for a modern fantasy audience that favors internal growth over superficial social validation. It has gained traction among readers who appreciate serialized tales of redemption and tactical romantic drama.
