Where it came from
My Friend Frankenstein was created by the acclaimed manga artist Wada Shinji, a pivotal figure in the shōjo manga landscape during the 1970s. Released as a singular narrative volume, the work reflects Shinji’s signature blend of dramatic tension and supernatural elements, which had already garnered him a significant following through his longer-running series like Sukeban Deka.
The volume showcases Shinji’s approach to reinterpreting classic gothic horror tropes through the lens of Japanese manga aesthetics. By humanizing the central monster figure, the work explores themes of loneliness and the search for belonging, a hallmark of Shinji's storytelling style during this era. It remains a representative piece of the experimental short-story manga output that characterized the evolution of the medium in the late twentieth century.
