Where it came from
My Heavenly Hockey Club was serialized by Ai Morinaga in the Japanese shoujo manga magazine Bessatsu Friend between 2005 and 2008. The series emerged during a period of rising interest in sports-themed romantic comedies, blending the high-stakes tropes of competitive field hockey with Morinaga’s signature penchant for slapstick humor and eccentric character dynamics.
The narrative follows Sayuri, a pragmatic student who is coerced into managing a dysfunctional hockey team, serving as a humorous subversion of the typical sports manga hero. Morinaga’s art style prioritizes expressive, exaggerated reactions to emphasize the comedic friction between the cast members, a design choice that earned the series a devoted following for its lighthearted tone and ability to balance genuine character development with chaotic, absurdity-driven storytelling.
