Where it came from
My Lovable Fatty, created by the South Korean manhwa artist Lee Hee Jeong, emerged during a period of significant growth for the Korean comic industry in the early 2000s. The series was designed to explore themes of self-acceptance and body positivity, utilizing the medium of romantic comedy to challenge prevailing societal beauty standards. Lee Hee Jeong employed a soft, expressive art style that emphasized character emotional development, aiming to resonate with young readers navigating the pressures of adolescence and social expectations.
Upon its release, the work was received as a heartfelt contribution to the shojo-influenced manhwa genre, gaining traction for its relatable protagonist and gentle narrative approach. It stands as a representative example of the era's focus on domestic slice-of-life storytelling, which sought to ground fantastical romance tropes in the realities of daily life. The series is often noted by collectors for its sincerity and its departure from more stylized, action-oriented comics of the same period.
