Where it came from
Mysterious Alice is a manga series created by the artist Kawachi Yukari, known for her distinctive and delicate illustrative style. The series, serialized in the early 2000s, serves as a reimagining of Lewis Carroll's classic tale, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Kawachi's work is characterized by its ethereal atmosphere and a surreal, dreamlike quality that leans into the darker, more unsettling undertones often found in the original source material.
The design of the volume reflects the gothic and romantic sensibilities prevalent in the demographic of seinen and josei manga of that era. Kawachi Yukari aimed to strip away the childhood whimsy associated with Alice to focus on themes of isolation and psychological depth. Upon release, the series was well-regarded by critics for its artistic vision and its ability to reinvent a well-trodden narrative through a moody, aesthetically driven lens.
